May 2024 Health Newsletter

Print-Friendly Newsletter

May 10, 2024

Dear Friends,

May is upon us, though it has been a bit strange. The weather is unpredictable, we are still feeling very mild aftershocks from our recent 4.8 earthquake, and within days we may have some technical hiccups from a solar flare. Are you feeling a little unsettled? I "get" you!

There is nothing we can do about any of those crazy things happening around us. But you can get adjusted to help with the tension and stress we feel. You know, the stress that tightens up our necks and shoulders, that makes it uncomfortable to sit and hard to relax! You can get adjusted to help relieve pain, relax your body, and to unwind the stiffness. Come in to get a handle on things so you can feel better and enjoy life!

Office hours are Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 9 -1 and 3 to 6 by appointment and Saturdays 9 - 1 by appointment. Call 201-525-0707 to make an appointment with me. Joan, Jolanta and Debi will find a convenient time for you to come in.

All the best and see you soon!

Carmel-Ann Mania, D.C.

Please support "Medicare Chiropractic Modernization Act" H.R. 610/ S.799

Arlington, VA – In March 2023, both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate  reintroduced legislation to increase access to Medicare-covered services provided by doctors of chiropractic. The Chiropractic Medicare Coverage Modernization Act (H.R. 1610 / S. 799) would bring Medicare’s coverage of chiropractic into alignment with most other federal programs and private health plans, giving seniors improved coverage of non-drug treatments to alleviate pain and improve function.

The legislation was introduced by Reps. Gregory Steube (R-Fla.), Brian Higgins (D-N.Y), Mark Alford (R-Mo.) and John Larson (D-Conn.) in the House and Sens. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.) in the Senate. Both bills were introduced with a number of bipartisan original cosponsors. An identical bill that expired last year in Congress achieved more than 150 cosponsors in the House, split almost evenly between Democrats and Republications, and six cosponsors in the Senate.

“The level of bipartisan support we achieved with the last bill tells us that this is an issue that resonates and has the momentum to go all the way,” noted John Falardeau, ACA senior vice president of public policy and advocacy. “We thank Sens. Blumenthal and Cramer and Reps. Steube, Higgins, Alford and Larson for their leadership in reintroducing this important legislation, which will benefit America’s seniors.”

“Giving Medicare beneficiaries more options for non-drug services to treat common musculoskeletal conditions such as back pain is critical in ongoing efforts to reduce opioid overuse,” noted ACA President Michael Martin, DC. “Chiropractic care is a part of the solution for many patients who seek to avoid or reduce their reliance on prescription pain medications.”

H.R. 1610/S. 799 would update the Medicare statute that has limited beneficiary access to chiropractic services for over 50 years. The legislation adds no new benefits; it simply allows Medicare beneficiaries access to the profession’s broad-based, non-drug approach to pain management and musculoskeletal health. This includes manual manipulation of the spine (the only chiropractic service now covered), as well as services such as manual manipulation of the extremities and numerous other non-drug treatments, evaluation and management services, and diagnostic imaging. The range of services available to beneficiaries would be determined by a chiropractor’s state licensure.

Chiropractic services and other nonpharmacologic approaches to pain management have become an important part of national efforts to reduce the overuse and abuse of prescription opioid pain medications. The opioid crisis has taken its toll among seniors and other Medicare beneficiaries as it has in communities nationwide.

Look for Insurance Changes

I want to let you know that we are likely going to be making some changes in the insurances that we are accepting. In the past few years, some of the Medicare advantage programs have begun to make it much more difficult for us to participate in.

Particularly, they are insisting on precertifying care with time consuming paperwork while only allowing payments for an office visit at a rate of about $34. This amount is only 80% of the already reduced Medicare contract rate (and half the reduced in-network rate for non-Medicare insurance). Then, the staff has to chase that $34 by internet and phone for minutes to hours to days. The patients are annoyed by the paperwork, and the staff is annoyed by the frustration and additional work. Up until now, we have offered the full range of care for the regular Medicare price allowed for spinal adjustment only. By statute, we are only paid through Medicare and supplemental insurance for spinal adjustments only. NOT for extremity adjustments, Not for musle or trigger point work, Not for Ultrasound, Muscle Stim, Intracell or Exams. We are permitted to charge for these services by obtaining your written permission, but have tried to be considerate of the many who are on a fixed income, while still providing the best possible care.

I would ask 3 things of each of you.1) Please check your Medicare coverage in the upcoming enrollment period to see exactly what you are getting for your money. If you can, consider a traditional Medicare plus Medigap supplement (like AARP/United Healthcare, etc.). 2) Anticipate filling out a written permission for the additional services needed in your care and paying the nominal fees for the services if you decide to stay in an Advantage plan.

And, most importantly, 3) contact your US Congress Representative and US Senators to pass HR. 1610/ S.799 the Chiropractic Coverage Modernization Act. This will give chiropractors the ability to charge Medicare for any services permitted under their state licenses, rather than continue the outdated and discriminatory restrictions currently in place. As always, know that the Staff and I appreciate the trust you have placed in us. Thank you for continuing to allow us to be a part of your search for optimum wellness!

Chiropractic Care for Car Accident Injuries: A Natural Approach

Car accidents can lead to a variety of injuries, ranging from minor discomfort to more serious conditions. Chiropractic care, provided by doctors of chiropractic (DCs), offers a proven, effective and natural approach to evaluating and treating many of the associated injuries. Let's explore how chiropractors can help individuals recover after an auto accident.

Evaluating Soft Tissue Injuries

  • Understanding Soft Tissue Injuries: Soft tissues include muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia. These structures are highly prone to injury during sudden impacts, such as car accidents. DCs specialize in assessing soft tissue damage, even when X-rays may not reveal injuries, as they more commonly do not.
  • Hands-On Assessment: Chiropractors use many techniques including manual techniques to evaluate soft tissues. They assess muscle tension, joint mobility, and alignment. By identifying areas of dysfunction, they create personalized treatment plans for maximum rehabilitation and outcome.

Treating Common Auto Accident Injuries

  • Back Pain: Chiropractic care including chiropractic adjustments help restore spinal alignment, reduce pain and inflammation and promote healing, naturally. Soft tissue therapies (such as massage or myofascial release) help alleviate muscle tension and inflammation.
  • Whiplash: Whiplash occurs due to rapid neck movement during collisions. Chiropractors address whiplash by providing safe soft tissue care which often includes gentle adjustments to the cervical and thoracic spine, improving range of motion, reducing pain and jumpstarting the healing process.
  • Headaches: Post-accident headaches often result from neck strain. Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapies can relieve tension and reduce headache frequency and pain intensity.
  • Other Injuries: Chiropractors also treat other joint and soft tissue sprains and strains. They emphasize natural healing, avoiding unnecessary medications or invasive procedures.

The Safety of Chiropractic Care

  • Non-Invasive Approach: Chiropractic care avoids surgery and medication. Patients appreciate the natural, drug-free solutions offered by DCs.
  • Evidence-Based Practice: Chiropractic treatments are backed by research. Studies show their effectiveness in managing pain and improving function.

Chiropractic care provides a safe, natural, and effective way to address car accident injuries. By focusing on soft tissue evaluation, spinal alignment, and evidence-based treatments, DCs play a crucial role in helping patients recover and regain their quality of life.

If you've been in an auto accident, please contact our office today. We can tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs, promoting healing and restoring well-being.

A Little Exercise, A Longer Life

Individuals partaking in even just a small amount of low-intensity exercise are significantly less likely to die prematurely than their sedentary counterparts, according to researchers.  The findings come from examining data from 10 previous studies of more than 36,000 older subjects.  The evidence is becoming more clear – stop moving, and the risk of death increases significantly.  Being sedentary 10 hours a day increased death during the close to 7-year study by 48%.  Those that pushed their sedentary lifestyle to 12 hours a day nearly tripled their risk of death during this time frame.  The good news is that researchers found that literally any level of physical activity level was beneficial.  Thus, you don’t need to run a marathon or even run to reap the benefits.  Simply get up, get out and just move!

Screen Time and Inactivity Unacceptable In Adolescents

According to research conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO), the majority of adolescents are not getting adequate amounts of physical activity.  The WHO recommends adolescents participate in an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily.  However, data obtained by the WHO from 1.6 million students between 2001 and 2016 found only 1 out of 5 children met the WHO’s recommendation for daily physical activity.  The WHO attributes this lack of physical activity to increase in home screen time which is replacing the time for physical activity.  While the data is extremely concerning and parents and educational leaders need to step up to create and implement solutions, the good news is that over the 15 years reviewed, the physical activity for boys has actually improved.  Unfortunately, over that same period of time, there has been no improvement for the physical activity in girls.
